When a character is knocked down, it can be still hit by most Low and some Mid attacks, causing a restand and receiving full damage - however, all Impact attacks will cause instead a Strong reaction on the downed character. However, the character on the receiving hand of a knockdown has several options to try and get a safe wake-up. Notice that, if no button is pressed and the opponent does not hit the downed character, the downed character will remain in a knockdown state indefinitely.
The simplest wake up type. It can be performed by pressing the Guard button, 4 or 6. Each of this inputs has a slightly different effect:
- Guard: the character will stand in place. If the button is kept pressed, they will block all incoming High and Mid' attacks. If 2 is pressed while in this state, the character will perform a crouching guard instead, thus blocking Low attacks.
- 4 (while facing right, 6 if facing left): the character will perform a step back while standing up. If the Guard button is pressed during this type of wake up, the above rules apply.
- 6 (while facing right, 4 if facing left): the character will perform a step forward while standing up. If the Guard button is pressed during this type of wake up, the above rules apply.
By pressing 8 or 2, the downed character will roll on the ground, toward the background or foreground respectively, for a short while, before automatically standing up. During the stand up animation, the Guard rules highlighted in the previous section apply. You can cancel side roll in any other roll by pressing Punch or Kick while rolling. From version 1.1 on, side roll is invincible against Low attacks.
By pressing the Kick button while downed, the character will perform a 23 frames forward roll which is completely invincible against High attacks, but can be hit by any Low or Mid attack.
By pressing the Punch button while downed, the character will perform a 28 frames bacward roll which is completely invincible against High and Mid attacks for the first 18 frames, but can be hit by any sufficiently far reaching Low. Backward roll covers less distance than its equivalent during an Impact Recovery.
Trigger reversal (wake up attack)
A special attack performed by pressing Punch+Kick while downed. Costs one Bullet Counter, cannot be performed without. The character performs a character-specific wake up attack which deals around 30 damage and has 23 frames of full armor against all kind of attacks except throws (damage is calculated normally). Notice that this attack is usually unsafe on block. Consult each character specific page for additional details.
