Originally from the light novel Hataraku Maou-sama.

Gameplay

Emi is a neutral-heavy character that's exceptional at controlling space at mid-range, with a powerful suite of poking normals, good anti-airs and a robust full-screen projectile game. Her toolset can control approaches from nearly any angle and she generally excels at dictating the pace of neutral. On offense, she can us her long ranging normals to lock up or frametrap the opponent, and she has a great airdash to surprise opponents with from above once she gets them blocking. Her Trump Card greatly improves all of her special moves and accelerates her airdash significantly, improving her already-strong neutral while giving her a scary rushdown game.

While she has great strengths in neutral, Emi can have difficulty capitalizing on her advantages once she lands a hit. Unlike other 'sword' characters like Shana or Asuna who don't typically struggle converting hits into good combos, Emi is forced to use resources to turn hits into meaningful combos, and often must choose between going for hard knockdown or getting good damage. Outside of using her Trump, her ability to aggressively mix up her opponents can also feel somewhat limited if your opponent has good responses to her IAD pressure. Emi players must have a keen eye for hit confirming efficiently (keeping an eye out for routes like counterhit 5C 214C) as well as a good sense of how to use assists to cover her weak areas.

Pros

  • Versatile and powerful neutral, with great normals even compared to other sword characters
  • Good airdash to open up opponents that respect her buttons
  • Extremely powerful in Trump
  • Good combo game if she can get a clean hit with resources

Cons

  • Meterless combos and hit confirms are very weak, must spend resources (especially Trump Cards) to convert anything
  • Somewhat mediocre in scrambles
  • If she can't capitalize on every Trump activation, she's not very scary offensively

Recommended Assists

Wilhelmina - By far the most popular assist for her in Japan. Both of Wilhelmina's assists are fast and provide tremendous utility in hit confirming, okizeme and neutral. The quick recharge time is also incredibly useful for Emi, as she benefits greatly from calling assists in both neutral and during combos. The top choice overall.

Dokuro - Dokuro 6S gives Emi a welcome long-range antiair and improves her neutral even further, while 5S has some utility in combos. Dokuro is useful for almost any character and Emi is no exception.

Potentials

Universal Potential: Increases damage dealt by 10% for 20 seconds when health falls under 30%. If behind in rounds won, increases damage dealt by 20% instead.

Character Potential: Hit the opponent with 10 attacks (in the case of multi-hitting moves only the first hit is counted) for Attack Level 1 for 20 seconds. Can be activated once a round.
