Emi Yusa (遊佐 恵美)

Introduction

Hero of Ente Isla who fought the Demon King. Though she pursued him to Japan, she is currently working as a call center agent to pay for her living expenses. She then finds the Demon King in Tokyo...

Originally from the light novel series Hataraku Maou-sama!, localized as The Devil Is a Part-Timer!.

Gameplay

The shoto-type character of DFCI. In other words, a well-balanced character with access to a myriad of tools for any situation. Wielding a sword, Emi has great ranged normals and her 2C sweep is quite effective at covering the close mid-range. 5A hits surprisingly high above her, making it a viable defensive anti-air and one of the best fuzzy 5A in the game. Emi is a generally a no-frills character until she enters Trump Mode, where her specials are improved and her airdash speeds up significantly, making her kit much more cohesive.

While she has great strengths in neutral, Emi can have difficulty capitalizing on her advantages once she lands a hit. Unlike other "sword" characters like Shana or Asuna who don't typically struggle converting hits into good combos, Emi is forced to use resources to turn hits into meaningful combos, and often must choose between going for hard knockdown or getting good damage. Outside of using her Trump, her ability to aggressively mix up her opponents can also feel somewhat limited if your opponent has good responses to her IAD pressure. Emi players must have a keen eye for hit confirming efficiently (keeping an eye out for routes like counterhit 5C 214C) as well as a good sense of how to use assists to cover her weak areas.

Emi Gameplay Sample

Pros

  • Has horizontal and vertical projectiles, allowing for limited zoning and far pokes
  • Amazing defensive 5A, great offensive poke with 2C. 2B has anti-air potential.
  • Blue Trump gives her access to potentially explosive damage and vastly improved zoning and offensive options
  • Her 63214BC Climax Art is a full screen projectile that can punish reckless opponents.

Cons

  • Dependent on her Trump Card to be a threat. Although she does not bear any strong weaknesses outside of Trump, she is simply average.
  • 6 Frame pokes and mediocre Impact Skills means she has difficulty escaping pressure.
  • Hit confirms can be overly finicky outside of Trump Mode
  • Only average general synergy with most assists.

Recommended Assists

Iriya - 5S gives you a plate projectile to use for setplay or to help you close in on opponents. 6S is a moped that can be used to punish Blasts or whiffed attacks and force out air options from the foe. Plates give Emi consistent setplay opportunities from hard knockdown, making Emi a more constant threat outside of Trump Mode.

Wilhelmina - Wilhelmina is a strong setplay assist that carries the threat of explosive damage behind every 6S. 5S is a quick projectile that can strike away other assists or be used as an anti-air or whiff punish. 6S is a timed bandage bind for combo extensions that can help Emi confirm air conversion into consistent big damage.

Tomo - Tomo provides both a full-screen projectile as well as a potential tick throw set-up. You can hold 5S or 6S to delay when she releases the arrow, giving you cross-up setups in Trump Mode. Furthermore, the assist has its own Climax Art by inputting 41236S, which provides a full screen confirm into Super damage.

Potentials

Universal Potential: Increases damage dealt by 10% for 20 seconds when health falls under 30%. If behind in rounds won, increases damage dealt by 20% instead.

Character Potential: Hit the opponent with 10 attacks (in the case of multi-hitting moves only the first hit is counted) for Attack Level 1 for 20 seconds. Can be activated once a round.
